About a year ago, I wrote an article on my blog titled “How To Save A Life.” It was about the best ways to deal with depression and it had a positive response from people who read it. However, I also received some backlash from people who thought the title of my post was making light of suicide and death.
I decided to write this follow up article in hopes that it will help those people understand my intentions better. When I came up with this title for my post, I wanted to show compassion for the person struggling with their depression by providing them information on helping themselves. It’s not meant to be too patronizing or puritanical. It is merely an attempt at humanizing the situation, not trivializing it.
I want to talk about suicide and depression more than most people do. I am comfortable with talking about problems because I believe that sharing our experiences with each other allows us to connect with each other on a more human level. It gives us empathy for what others are going through. It opens up avenues of discussion between people who may not talk about certain subjects otherwise.
It’s important, however, that we respect each other while we discuss these things. If this were a discussion about a disease that affects the human body, we wouldn’t be offended if someone used a metaphor to help us understand. It’s important that we also do the same to each other when talking about things like depression and suicide.
I want people to know that I am aware people who are suffering from depression may die by suicide. I also want them to know that I don’t think they are just over reacting. I think that we all over react to things we don’t understand. I know that because it happens to me all the time.
However, I want the people who commit suicide to see this as compassion towards them, not pity. Pity is a kind of guilt and something that seems to be reserved for those who are victims rather than benefactors. I know that I’ve felt it before. I try to help someone and they thank me, but it’s tinged with pity. And that makes me feel bad about myself for being too helpful.
I don’t want people who are suffering from depression to think they are victims. I want them to see this as a genuine attempt at helping them out of the hole they have fallen into.
I hope this article helps people understand my intentions were pure when I wrote my first post on suicide and depression.
